Diamond stud earrings are the piece you can wear every day, with everything. Choosing a pair comes down to four things: size, setting, back and style. Here is what to know.
1. Size: what "ct. tw." means
Earrings are sold by total carat weight (ct. tw.), which is the weight of both earrings together. A pair marked 1 ct. tw. has about 0.50 carat in each ear.
This chart shows the approximate width of a round diamond in each ear:
| Total (pair) | Each earring | Approx. width | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.50 ct. tw. | 0.25 ct | 4.1 mm | Small and subtle |
| 1 ct. tw. | 0.50 ct | 5.1 mm | The most popular everyday size |
| 1.50 ct. tw. | 0.75 ct | 5.8 mm | Clearly noticeable |
| 2 ct. tw. | 1.00 ct | 6.4 mm | Statement size |
Tip: a halo or cluster stud looks larger than its carat weight, because many small diamonds work together to create one bigger shape.
2. Setting
- Four-prong: the classic choice. Shows the most diamond and lets in the most light.
- Three-prong (martini): sits close to the ear and looks clean from the front.
- Bezel: a thin rim of gold around the stone. Very secure and modern, and good for an active life.
- Halo: a ring of small diamonds around the center stone for extra sparkle.
3. Earring backs
- Push-back: easy to put on and take off. The most common type.
- Screw-back: the post is threaded, so the back screws on. The most secure option for larger diamonds.
4. Diamond shape and style
Round studs are the most classic and the most sparkly. Princess-cut studs look modern and crisp. Marquise and cluster designs give a fresh, fashion-forward look. Learn more in our diamond shapes guide.
Lab-grown or natural?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same look and hardness as natural ones, usually at a much lower price. That lets you choose a bigger pair for the same budget. Read our lab-grown vs. natural diamond guide to compare.
Gold color
White gold gives an icy look that suits bright, colorless diamonds. Yellow gold looks warm and classic. Rose gold is soft and romantic. All three are durable in 14k gold.
