A tennis bracelet is a flexible line of diamonds of matching size, set all the way around the wrist. It is one of the most loved pieces of fine jewelry, easy to wear alone or stacked. Here is how to choose one.
Why is it called a tennis bracelet?
The name is usually linked to tennis champion Chris Evert, whose diamond line bracelet fell off during a match in 1987. Play stopped while it was found, and the name stuck. The story is also a good reminder of why a secure clasp matters.
1. Total carat weight
Tennis bracelets are sold by total carat weight (ct. tw.), the weight of all the diamonds together. The more carats, the larger each diamond looks.
| Total weight | Look |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 ct. tw. | Delicate and easy to wear every day |
| 3 to 5 ct. tw. | Classic, clearly noticeable sparkle |
| 5 ct. tw. and up | Statement piece |
2. Length
About 7 inches is the standard length for women. To find your size, measure your wrist snugly with a soft tape or a strip of paper, then add about 0.5 inch for a close fit or 1 inch for a looser fit. A bracelet that is too loose can catch on things.
3. Setting
- Prong: small claws hold each diamond. Shows the most sparkle.
- Bezel: a thin rim of gold around each stone. Smooth, secure and modern.
- Channel: diamonds sit between two walls of gold. Very secure and good for daily wear.
4. Clasp
Look for a box clasp with a safety latch. The box clasp clicks shut, and the latch adds a second lock if the first one opens. This is the most important detail for a bracelet you will wear every day.
5. Gold color and diamond type
White gold makes diamonds look icy and bright. Yellow and rose gold give a warmer look. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds and let you choose a higher carat weight for the same budget. See our lab-grown vs. natural diamond guide.
Caring for your bracelet
Take it off for sports, swimming and heavy work. Clean it with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, the same way you would clean a diamond ring. Have the clasp and settings checked once a year.
