How to Find Your Ring Size at Home: 4 Methods + Free Chart

Getting the ring size right matters — a ring that’s too loose can slip off, and one that’s too tight is uncomfortable and hard to remove. Here are four ways to find your ring size at home, plus advice for buying a surprise engagement ring.

Half sizes fall exactly between these. Most women’s rings fall between size 5 and 7; most men’s between 9 and 11.

Method 1: Measure an existing ring

The most accurate home method. Take a ring that already fits the correct finger, measure the inside diameter in millimeters with a ruler, and match it to the chart above. Measure straight across the inside edge to inside edge.

Method 2: String or paper strip

Wrap a strip of paper or a piece of non-stretchy string around the base of the finger.
Mark where it overlaps and lay it flat against a ruler.
That length in millimeters is your circumference — match it to the chart.

Wrap snugly, not tight, and make sure it slides over the knuckle.

Method 3: Printable ring sizer

Search “printable ring size chart,” print it at 100% scale (check the test box with a ruler), and either place an existing ring over the circles or cut out the paper sizer and wrap it around your finger.
