Every diamond is graded on four characteristics known as the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. Together they determine how a diamond looks, how rare it is, and what it costs. Understanding how the 4Cs work together is the single most useful thing you can do before shopping for an engagement ring. This guide explains each C in plain language and shows you where to spend and where to save.
1. Cut — the most important C
Cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light — not its shape. A well-cut diamond returns light back to your eye as brightness, fire (flashes of color) and sparkle. A poorly cut stone looks dull and glassy even if its other grades are excellent.
Cut is graded on a scale from Excellent / Ideal down to Poor. Our recommendation is simple: never compromise on cut. Stay within Excellent or Very Good and your diamond will sparkle in any light. If you need to save money, save it on color or clarity instead.
2. Color — how white the diamond is
Diamond color is graded from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The differences between neighboring grades are subtle and often invisible once a diamond is set in a ring.
- D–F (Colorless): Rare and premium-priced. A noticeable step up in cost for a difference most people can’t see face-up.
- G–H (Near-colorless): The sweet spot. These stones look white, especially in white gold or platinum, at a much friendlier price.
- I–J (Near-colorless): Excellent value, and a beautiful match for yellow or rose gold, where a hint of warmth blends in completely.
Tip: the larger the diamond, the more visible color becomes, so size up your color grade slightly as carat weight increases.
3. Clarity — the diamond’s natural fingerprint
Almost every diamond formed with tiny internal features called inclusions and surface features called blemishes. Clarity grades how noticeable these are under 10x magnification:
- FL / IF: Flawless or internally flawless — extremely rare and priced accordingly.
- VVS1–VVS2: Inclusions very difficult to see even under magnification.
- VS1–VS2: Inclusions visible under magnification but not to the naked eye. Excellent value.
- SI1–SI2: Often “eye-clean” — meaning you can’t see inclusions without magnification — especially in smaller stones and brilliant cuts.
For most buyers, a VS2 or eye-clean SI1 diamond looks identical to a flawless one at a fraction of the price. Step-cut shapes like emerald and Asscher show inclusions more easily, so favor VS or better for those.
4. Carat — the diamond’s weight
Carat is a measure of weight, not size: one carat equals 0.2 grams. Price rises sharply at “magic” weights like 0.50 ct, 1.00 ct, 1.50 ct and 2.00 ct because of demand.
You can get noticeably more value by choosing a weight just below a milestone — a 0.90 ct stone looks almost identical to a 1.00 ct but can cost significantly less. Also compare the diamond’s millimeter diameter, not just its carat weight: a well-cut diamond carries its weight across the top and looks larger.
