Match the metal to your engagement ring
Your band and engagement ring will sit together, so the metal should match — the same color and, ideally, the same alloy (14k with 14k, platinum with platinum) so they wear at the same rate. If your engagement ring is white gold, your band should be white gold too; mixing platinum and gold is fine aesthetically but the softer metal wears faster where they rub. See our metals guide.
Straight or curved (contoured)?
- Straight band: works with most solitaires and any ring where the center stone sits high enough to clear a flat band. Simplest and easiest to wear alone.
- Curved / contoured band: notched or wavy to nest around a low-set stone, a halo, or a three-stone ring so there’s no gap. Often needed for pear, marquise and vintage settings.
- Open / chevron band: a V-shape that frames a pointed diamond.

Choose a width and profile
- Width: women’s bands are commonly 1.5–2.5 mm; men’s 4–7 mm. A wider band feels tighter — size up a quarter to half size (see ring sizing).
- Profile: “comfort fit” bands are domed on the inside and slide on more easily — worth it for everyday wear.

Anniversary rings
An anniversary band is a gift for a milestone — often a diamond eternity or half-eternity band worn stacked with the original two rings, or on the right hand. Many couples also mark an anniversary by upgrading the engagement ring’s center stone or resetting it into a new design. There’s no rule — a diamond that reflects how your taste has grown is the point.

The metal color should match. The style can either match (a coordinated bridal set) or deliberately contrast — a plain band under an ornate engagement ring is a popular, timeless choice.
Which finger and order do the rings go on?
Traditionally the wedding band is worn closest to the heart (below the engagement ring). Many people have the jeweler solder the two together after the wedding so they stay aligned.
Can a wedding band be resized?
Plain and half-set bands usually can. Full eternity bands generally cannot — order those in your exact size.
Do men’s and women’s bands need to match?
No. Matching metal is a nice touch, but width, finish and style are personal.
